Rules for the Medford, Oregon Residents Facebook® Group
- Be respectful and kind. Treat the people in this group like they’re your neighbors – because they are (and not those annoying neighbors that let their dogs bark at 3 am, the good ones that water your plants and get your mail when you’re out of town)! Disagreements are fine, but bullying is not. Threats, bigotry, hate speech, name calling, etc will not be tolerated, and will get you removed or banned from the group.
- Keep it local. Posts should center around Medford and the surrounding areas. General, non-local discussions (state and national politics, religious debates, tv show recaps, videos of a cat doing the moonwalk, etc) are perfect posts for your personal page, but aren’t a great fit for this group.
- Keep it legal. Do not post pictures or personal information about others without their permission. This includes posts about suspicious activity and bad driving. We are not the police. If you see something illegal, please call the Medford Police at 541-770-4784, or call 911 if it’s an emergency. It’s okay to share a crime-in-progress, but please add the case number you get from the police as soon as possible. Your post will need to include a case number within a few hours or it will be removed.
- Keep it factual. False news, misinformation, or presenting opinions as facts will not be tolerated. Neither will “soapbox” rants, trolling, or posts that serve the sole purpose of starting arguments or getting people riled up . Your posts will be deleted, and multiple infractions will lead to your being muted or removed from the group.
- Political posts should be informative and local: Absolutely no posts about national or state politics. This group is for the discussion of local news, events, and issues, so national and statewide topics aren’t relevant. If you do decide to share a post about local politics, it should be strictly informative, not inflammatory or opinion based. There are a million different places to share your opinion on what the president, governor, or other political party is doing today, but this group isn’t one of them. People who are unable/unwilling to follow these rules will be removed from the group. See below for a few examples of acceptable and unacceptable political posts.
- ✔ OK – “There are two new candidates running for Mayor: Candidate A and Candidate B. Here is where they stand on the issues”
- ✔ OK – “Measure number 123 will be on the ballot this fall. A yes vote will raise taxes to buy everyone a puppy. A no vote will not increase taxes, but it will increase lonely puppies.”
- ✔ OK – “A local law goes into effect today today. Here’s how the new law applies Medford residents…”
- ✖ NOT OKAY – “Candidate A smells funny! Vote for Candidate B!”
- ✖ NOT OKAY – “Vote yes on measure 123!”
- ✖ NOT OKAY – “The President/Governor/Senator sneezed today and I’m angry about it! Let me tell you why everyone who disagrees with me is wrong…”
- No public shaming/Respect everyone’s privacy. Complaints about a person, business, politician, other group, etc should be brought to that person directly, not posted in our group. Additionally, don’t pester group members via private message or on their personal page. Making new friends is great, but if someone doesn’t want to speak to you outside the group, respect that decision. Lastly, do not take screenshots from this group and share them in other forums unless the person(s) in the screenshot has given you permission.
- Events that add value to the group may be posted once. Educational classes, youth sports, community or charitable events, yard sales, and open-membership clubs may be posted once per event. Duplicate posts will be deleted, so please coordinate with everyone involved in your event to decide who will post in the group. Please only post recurring events once. Decisions on whether your event adds value is left to the discretion of the admins.
- No advertising or self-promotion – except for the “Mind Your (Local) Business” post. The “Mind Your (Local) Business” post will be open for comments from 8am-6pm on the first of each month. During this time, local businesses may comment on the post with their details and contact information. Aside from this post, advertisements and promotions will be deleted. Multiple infractions may lead to muting or removal from the group.
- Advertising policy continued…
- If a group member asks for a referral and your business is relevant, you can (and should!) respond. This is not considered advertising, and is allowed.
- Real estate, items for sale, job postings, and other “classifieds” type posts are considered advertising. They are not allowed (unless you are responding to a request posted in the group).
- The sale of weapons, controlled substances, or animals is not allowed on Facebook® and will lead to immediate removal of your post – no exceptions.
- Promotion of affiliate links or multi-level-marketing companies is not permitted by members of the group.
- Crowdfunding campaigns (for example Kickstarter®, GoFundMe®, etc) are not allowed. There may be exceptions for local charities that are raising funds for a specific event. Please contact the admins at mail@medfordoregonresidents.com to see if your campaign qualifies before posting.
- A local business directory is currently in development by the admins of this group. Once it is live you may promote your business there for free.
- The admins of this group will occasionally organize promotions of local businesses via giveaways, contests, or special posts. If your business is interested in participating, email mail@medfordoregongresidents.com for more details.
- Don’t block or bash the admins. Admins are people too! The “be respectful and kind” rule applies to your interactions with us as well. This is a privately run group. We work hard to foster a safe, inviting community for everyone, and removal of comments/posts/events/members is open to our discretion. If you block the admins or moderators, you will be removed from the group. We won’t be able to warn you (because you blocked us… duh).
- Group Disclaimer: Use common sense when providing your personal information. Purchases made and business recommendations used are done so at your own risk. Before messaging the admins regarding a personal gripe or other situation, please try to work it out. We are not qualified to mediate or give legal advice and you post to the group at your own risk. Note that we cannot always reply to all personal messages. Please email us at mail@medfordoregonresidents.com where messages are more likely to reach us. Rules subject to change without notice.
